Leafs training camp is over for seven more players today.

Forwards Casey Bailey, Frederik Gauthier, Brendan Leipsic and Josh Leivo were all assigned to the Toronto Marlies (whose camp begins this weekend). Three other players were returned to their junior clubs; forward Dmytro Timashov (returned to the Quebec Remparts), defensemen Travis Dermott (Erie Otters), and Andrew Nielsen (Lethbridge Hurricanes).

The cuts leave the Maple Leafs training camp with 46 remaining players, listed below.

None of these cuts are particularly surprising. The three players returning to junior are all 18 year-olds who were drafted this past year, and so they were always going to go back to their respective CHL clubs. Dermott and Timashov in particular had looked strong in their brief performances in preseason games.

As for the forwards assigned to the Marlies, these were four players that were pretty much locks to be returning to the AHL this season, so getting them focused on their role there isn't really a major issue to me.

We can quibble about whether we expected certain guys to stay with the team longer or not, but being the eighth last forward cut versus the thirteenth last forward cut isn't really a major difference.

The Leafs still have a full roster full of cuts to make (including some pretty obvious-looking ones like Rob Madore and Rich Clune), and some decisions on PTO players, so clearing out a few spots gives the coaching staff some time to weigh those decisions.

The Leafs next preseason game is Friday night in Buffalo.

(EDIT: Friday's game is in Toronto, not Buffalo. Apologies to the poor bastard I made think he had to go to Buffalo.)
