Update:

And guess who is playing in Toronto tomorrow. Huh.

Cayden Primeau was acquired by the Leafs just before opening day when he was waived by the Carolina Hurricanes in order to move him to their AHL team.

He was signed by the Hurricanes in the summer to a one-year minimum salary deal.

The Leafs have Joe Woll almost back in action – he is set to begin a conditioning stint with the Marlies tomorrow – so they are taking the opportunity to remove Primeau from the active roster ahead of what will soon be Woll's reinstatement. He won't be back this weekend in the Leafs back-to-back games, obviously, but soon.

Dennis Hildeby will likely be recalled if Primeau is claimed tomorrow. Note: if Primeau clears waivers, the Leafs are not obligated to move him to the AHL immediately. If he does clear, the Leafs will have a surplus of goalies in the minors.

If Carolina submits a claim, and no one else does, they can immediately move him to the AHL and he is deemed to have cleared waivers. This is the most likely outcome unless some other team needs a goalie urgently.

Primeau appeared in three games for the Maple Leafs with a 0.838 [now corrected] Save %. Save % really says nothing about a goalie though, so his Goals saved above Expected (Moneypuck) is -6.8 which if you rate that out per 60 minutes makes him the worst performing goalie in the NHL so far this year.
