Cayden Primeau, 26, is a goalie, originally drafted by Montréal. He was under contract with the Hurricanes, but they put him on waivers yesterday.

As you know, Joseph Woll is on leave for an unspecified time.

Primeau, son of Keith is the first cousin of the Marlies' Blake Smith, a defender who did fairly well in training camp.

While with Montréal, Primeau played in 55 NHL games, and had a Save % of .884. The Canadiens weren't very good during this period, so it pays to check if that number really means

Okay, most of the time, he's been very bad. Not always, though.

He does have NHL experience, something sorely lacking in Dennis Hildeby. Since he was claimed on waivers, the intention has to be to play him in the NHL. There is a way for the Leafs to carry both Primeau and Hildeby if they wish. We'll find out today at 5 pm.

To send Primeau to the Marlies, he would have to clear waivers, and Carolina could just claim him back.

He is currently on a one-year contract at $775,000.

Sammy Blais, 29, is a left-shooting winger who was originally drafted by St. Louis, and played there when Craig Berube was coach. He was under contract with Montréal, but they waived him yesterday.

He is on a one-year contract for $775,000 as well.

Blais has spent some seasons fully in the NHL, but has never been a regularly rostered player. He spent last year on the powerhouse Abbotsford team, AHL affiliate of the Canucks.

Per HockeyViz, Blais' impacts are largely defensive, and he has been consistently good through his recent NHL career. He doesn't score a lot, and he doesn't shoot much. He does shoot from decent locations however. He's also 6'2" and 200 lbs, so that's likely where some of his impact on the ice is coming from.

As with Primeau, the intent has to be to play Blais in the NHL. Otherwise, he can just be claimed back if the Leafs try to waive him.
