In the first week of training camp, leading into the first two preseason games, Max Domi was the only notable absence up front. He's back now, and the remaining players are mostly healthy. Nic Roy has missed some practices and hasn't played yet, and Simon Benoit is still not taking part. And, in case you missed it, Joe Woll is taking a leave of absence for an undisclosed private matter.
With all the junior players save Ben Danford back with their teams, the camp is streamlined a bit, and the new groups, not dramatically different from the old ones, are:
Group One
Steven Lorentz
Calle Järnkrok
Matthew Knies
Scott Laughton
Auston Matthews
Easton Cowan
Matias Maccelli
David Kämpf
Ryan Tverberg
Nick Robertson
Alex Nylander
Brandon Carlo
John Prokop
Morgan Rielly
Phil Myers
Blake Smith
Marshall Rifai
Oliver Ekman-Larsson
Chas Sharpe
Dennis Hildeby
Artur Akhtyamov
Knies - Matthews - Maccelli
Lorentz - Laughton - Cowan
Robertson - Kämpf - Järnkrok
Tverberg - Quillan - Nylander
Rielly - Carlo
Ekman-Larsson - Myers
Rifai - Sharpe
Smith - Prokop
Line three in this group is essentially line five on the depth chart as it stands now. Everyone on the Quillan line here and the two bottom-six lines below are heading to the Marlies.
With Woll attending to his personal business, the buzz has been about the opportunity for Dennis Hildeby – who played very well in two scoreless periods in Game Two. However, it's Artur Akhtyamov who is getting in more preseason games, and Slava Peksa who will be with this main group longer.
Group Two
Max Domi
Bo Groulx
Borya Valis
Luke Haymes
Nicolas Roy
Michael Pezzetta
Vinni Lettieri
Travis Boyd
Bobby McMann
Dakota Joshua
William Nylander
John Tavares
Henry Thrun
Chris Tanev
Jake McCabe
Matt Benning
Dakota Mermis
Ben Danford
Cade Webber
William Villeneuve
Anthony Stolarz
Vyacheslav Peksa
McMann - Tavares - Nylander
Joshua - Roy - Domi
Pezzetta - Haymes - Lettieri
Valis - Groulx - Boyd
McCabe - Tanev
Mermis - Danford
Thrun - Villeneuve
Webber - Benning
Domi starts camp on what appears to be the Leafs third line, and Ben Danford is benefitting from Benoit's absence by remaining high up in the mix after playing in two games.
Cuts of players to the AHL can begin at the end of this week when waivers start up again, but there aren't any signs the Leafs are in a hurry to move players off of these two groups to the other, never mentioned, AHL group. The Marlies official training camp, where they will bring in all the AHL-contracted players and then gradually add the NHL-contracted players who are sent down, doesn't begin until after all the preseason NHL games are finished.
The next two games are tomorrow in Montréal, and then at home on Saturday to the Canadiens. We should expect a similar depth group travelling tomorrow and an NHL-heavy roster at home on the weekend.
