Today the Maple Leafs issued this notice:
— Toronto Maple Leafs (@MapleLeafs) May 25, 2026
Forward Max Domi underwent offseason surgery to address an issue he played through during the 2025-26 season. Due to complications arising from the procedure, Domi will be out indefinitely.
Domi will continue working with the club's medical staff and will be re-evaluated at the start of training camp.
This is a very unusual situation. Domi had what could be argued to be his worst season ever in all areas of his play. His normal offence generation was gone, and his impacts on goal-scoring were extremely negative. Craig Berube struggled to find a place for him in the lineup, finally using him as a centre at the end of the season when the rest of the options were injured or traded. To call it a lost season is an understatement.
Domi, now 31 years old, is under contract for two more years at $3.75 million. That number is just under the cap on in-season LTIR. Which means that should Domi be unable to play next season in October, there is full relief for his cap hit regardless of how long he will be out of action.
Off-season LTIR also exists. It is often not needed as teams are allowed to exceed the cap by 10% in the offseason, and the total cap hits that count against the cap are calculated very differently in the offseason to how a 23-man roster is calculated.
No details have been provides as to what sort of issue he played through, or what sort of complications he has suffered. Domi is a Type 1 Diabetic and has managed this condition all through his junior and professional hockey career.
