Troy Stecher is a right-shooting defender who is not as young as he seems. He is now 32.

Acquired as a waiver pickup last year when the Edmonton Oilers couldn't tell he could defend, he brought actual quality play to the Leafs blueline, aided in large part by playing with Jake McCabe, but he was actually good and has offensive skills as well.

He is coming off a two-year deal with an AAV of $787,500, so this is a nice raise for him. It is very rare to get a legitimate NHL-playable depth defender who adds value for an AAV this low.

That's outstanding success for the Leafs of last year on defence. (For anyone not named McCabe.)
