Good morning Toronto Maple Leafs fans!
Way back in the regular season, on Wednesdays I would occasionally check up on a former Leaf, see how they're doing, if they got another job after retirement, or faded into 3rd tier German league hockey obscurity.
But since we're in the playoffs, why not see what former Leafs are still playing, and maybe find out which of our future opponents hosts the most Leafs.
Florida Panthers
Evan Rodrigues
0GP - 0G - 0A - 0Pts
A technically former Leaf, Rodrigues was traded to the Leafs with David Warsofsky, Filip Hållander and the 15th overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for Kasperi Kapanen, Jesper Lindgren and Pontus Åberg.
However, he didn't sign with Toronto, and returned to Pittsburgh.
Carter Verhaeghe
0GP - 0G - 0A - 0Pts
Another technically a Leaf, Verhaeghe was a Leafs draft pick and was in the infamous five for one photo day trade to the NY Islanders with Christopher Gibson, Tom Nilsson, Taylor Beck and Matt Finn for Michael Grabner.
Carolina Hurricanes
Frederik Andersen
268GP - .914sv% - 2.79GAA - 13SO
Andersen came from Anaheim in 2015, and left for Carolina in 2021. He's posting similar numbers in Carolina as he did Toronto, and big picture he wasn't terrible on either team, but seems to be getting more support in the playoffs in Caroloina.
Jackson Blake*
Okay, he wasn't a Leaf but half his DNA was. He's son of former Maple Leaf Jason Blake.
Washington Capitals
Rasmus Sandin
140GP - 10G - 38A - 48Pts
First round pick, former Soo Greyhound, defender of the future!
Sent to Washington after after four NHL seasons for a first round pick. However, that pick became Easton Cowan. Win-win.
Edmonton Oilers
Connor Brown
253GP - 43G - 56A - 99Pts
Someone who I referred to as "just a guy" in the Top 25 every year, much to Justin Bourne's chagrin, he was a solid forward, and did good things and had to be sacrificed to get rid of Nikita Zaitsev in 2019.
Zach Hyman
345GP - 86G - 99A - 185Pts
A long, loyal, Leaf, Hyman would be stapled to Auston Matthews, and then stapled to the penalty box as the refs stopped giving him the benefit of the doubt. He got a big ol' contract with the Oilers that I would not have paid him, but he's playing with McDavid now so...good for him.
Kasperi Kapanen
202GP - 43G - 53A - 96Pts
I was incredibly surprised to see Kapanen on the Oilers. I thought he was in the KHL. He was on the Blues and went to Edmonton at the deadline.
John Klingberg
14GP - 0G - 5A - 5Pts
Another surprising name, the Oilers just love the Leafs I guess. A disaster of a deal, and man he shouldn't have gone to free agency. He played 14 games as a Leaf, and only hit 11 so far in Edmonton.
Calvin Pickard
1GP - .857sv% - 3.83GAA
A one and done Leaf he didn't have a memorable time in Toronto.
Vegas Golden Knights
Ilya Samsonov
82GP - .905sv% - 2.71GAA - 7SO
He came cheap from Washington, did his duty over two seasons, and moved to Vegas over the summer as the Leafs picked Woll & Stolarz instead.
Dallas Stars
Colin Blackwell
19GP - 2G - 1A - 3Pts
He came to Toronto in the Giordano deal, and left that same season. He spent two seasons in Chicago, and now he's in a much better place.
Cody Ceci
56GP - 1G - 7A - 8Pts
Another surprise. Maybe Dallas has the same "internal metrics" that the Leafs had.
Ilya Lyubushkin
50GP - 2G - 8A - 10Pts
Dallas loves Leafs like Edmonton, but I think Edmonton has better taste.
Two different deadline moves to Toronto for him. Maybe we will get him again next year.
Mason Marchment
4GP - 0G - 1A - 1Pt
Traded for Denis Malgin in 2020, at the time it was an ECHLer for an AHLer, but Florida got the last laugh when he became a regular NHLer, and Malgin noped out of the NHL during the pandemic and stayed home in Switzerland.
Winnipeg Jets*
Luke Schenn
325GP - 15G - 61A - 76Pts
OLAS - Our Luke and Savior - also got two stints with the Leafs. From draft to being traded for JvR, then back at the 2023 trade deadline we always loved and appreciated you Luke Schenn. Don't read the comments.
So many Leafs that got away, or were tossed aside, still in the playoffs. I can't wait to see Nylander light up Samsonov in the finals.
After all that, here's some news.
Bobby McMann. The question isn't where did he go, but where did he come from?

Todd Bertuzzi is getting into the coaching game, with the Jr. B GOJHL Cambridge Redhawks, who play on the beautiful, old Galt Arena Gardens.

The Marlies saw game one against Florida and decided they need to train our own rats.

He's right, but it's less fun.

Finally, in last night's games. the Hurricanes took the series lead over Washington.

And the Oilers beat the Golden Knights 4-2 to take their series' first game.
Our game two is tonight.
Go Leafs Go!
