Marlies pad out their roster with a host of players on tryouts

New, comments

With cuts from the NHL camp not coming until at least Wednesday, the Marlies will start out with a lot of new faces.

COLLEGE HOCKEY: FEB 10 Colorado College at North Dakota
Trey Bradley, one of the new AHLers this year.

Today the Marlies have announced the roster for their training camp which begins tomorrow:

There are a lot of players on tryout contracts as well as all the AHL-contracted players already signed by Toronto.

We had advanced reports of two new faces, Mitch Gillam and Regan Nagy:

But there are many more on this roster:

Justin Auger: 25 years old, RW, former Guelph Storm player, had a decent AHL season in his pro debut, and an even better one in the ECHL last year.

Bo Brauer: 24 years old, RW, former NCAA player where he had tiny amounts of points, bounced around the ECHL last year, but was good for Worcester.

Matt Campagna: 25 years old, C, U of T grad, signed to the Brampton Beast.

Karl El-Mir: 23 years old, C/LW, Canadian who played NCAA, is signed to the Indy Fuel.

Freddy Gerard: 25 years old, F, NCAA grad signed ot the Idaho Steelheads.

Craig Martin: 24 years old, F, Canadian NCAA grad, signed to the Adirondack Thunder.

Brendan Warren: 22 years old, LW, NCAA grad, signed to the Indy Fuel.

Mark Auk: 24 years old, D, NCAA grad who played a year in Finland and is signed to the Toledo Walleye.

Mike Crocock: 24 years old, D, has heard all the jokes, Canadian NCAA grad without a contract this year. He played in the SPHL at the end of his college season last year. Played one season for Sheldon Keefe in Pembroke

Steve Johnson: 25 years old, D, NCAA grad, played on two ECHL teams last year, is without a contract.

Zach Malatesta: 23 years old, D, American graduate of the QMJHL, and is about to start his third ECHL season with the Atlanta Gladiators.

Brady Norrish: 26 years old, D, Canadian NCAA grad, signed by the Idaho Steelheads.

Zach Palmquist: 28 years old, D, shoots left, played for the Iowa Wild in the AHL for three full seasons, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms last year, and has no contract.

Brandon Halverson: former Soo Greyhounds goalie who has been at the Leafs training camp as an extra.

There’s also at least three players newly signed to Newfoundland Growlers ECHL contracts who have to be on a tryout to attend Marlies camp.

This is a pretty traditional set of ECHL players, and very few of them will suddenly look like they should be on AHL deals. Palmquist is the exception to this, but where the Marlies would fit in another defender is a good question.

This group will eventually see the arrival of the NHL-contracted Marlies, but that won’t happen until Wednesday at the earliest.
