This morning word came out about the use of third jerseys next season when Adidas takes over manufacturing the NHL sweaters:

Sportslogos.net helps confirm this is the case as well.

So, what does this mean for the Toronto Maple Leafs?

Well, the only third jersey introduced this season is the Centennial Classic jersey, which was only going to be worn at the Centennial Classic.

Also this year, the Maple Leafs have a St. Pat’s night planned for March 18th against the Chicago Blackhawks, to pay tribute to the teams original jerseys worn after changing ownership from the Toronto Arena Company.

Neither of these sweaters would carry over to the next season as they were created for one night only events. There is one big event coming next season for sure, and that’s the Maple Leafs Centennial Game next season. November 17th, 2017 is the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Toronto Maple Leafs. This year that is a Friday night, so there could be a special ceremonial game help that night or on Saturday November 18th.

Will the Toronto Maple Leafs wear a special jersey next season to honour the founding of the team, or do these new rules apply no matter what, even on a 100th birthday?

Many people have wanted to see a jersey based on the Toronto Arena’s sweater for the centennial, as well as other styles of the past brought back for one game, as the Montreal Canadiens did (thank fully we don’t have anything like this monstrosity in our past). Would these count as third jerseys under the rule, or will there be exceptions made?

Also rumoured for next season is an outdoor game at Montreal’s Molson Stadium to honour the 100th anniversary of the founding of the NHL, which was also on November 17th, 1917 (more on that this week), and one in Ottawa in honour of the first NHL game played. Will these events be exempt?

We’ll find out more as the NHL, Maple Leafs, and Adidas release official word on jerseys and events for next season.

In the meantime, what jerseys do you want to see the Maple Leafs honour?
