This is the day we find out where John Chayka wants to go. We all know the history since Keith Pelley was hired as CEO and that his mandate is apparently to clean house of whatever or whomever was broken or not working, and then to go and make bold moves.

You only need to look at what happened with the Raptors yesterday, still unofficial, that MLSE executives have given out leeway to the management of the franchises to make bold and aggressive moves to right the franchise ships.

In Bay Street terms, Pelley was directed to go risk-on, which is why he went to Chayka to run the Leafs in the first place since Treliving was the expert at risk-off and therefore not compatible with the ownership's current philosophy.

Today we see what that brings us, and you can insert here the many discussions already had about how the league has swung to a predictable annual salary cap increase environment and all that entails. I won't repeat it all, but I remember when it was like that before with Brian Burke in charge and you do have to be careful as a rising salary cap can cover up many mistakes and over-payments. Risk is the GM's business, but not the stupid kind of risk. Today we find out how good Chayka is at that job.

I'll now leave this totally unrelated clip of an NHL player that is UFA here. You know what to do, John.

Here's some interesting things that happened yesterday.

And some Marlies news.

Champs already at work retooling for next season

It's going to be hot out there today in Southern Ontario, with temperatures forecast to go slightly above 30°C in most of the GTA and intense humidity by around noon, so if you have some errands to run, do them as early as possible. The Eaton Centre will open, but not until 11:00 a.m., while Yorkdale and Sherway Gardens are shutdown. The LCBO is totally closed, but some Beer Store locations will be open. I'm sure you can find one of those "what's open and closed" stock stories the media puts out for days like this.

Then you can chat here with us about the developments of the day, whatever they may be.

UPDATE: The Werenski trade that was vetoed was to Dallas:

Zach Werenski vetoes trade to Dallas Stars
According to Elliotte Friedman, Dallas and Columbus had a trade in place, but Zach Werenski vetoed it.
