The CHL transfer agreement with the USA has lapsed.

It is a little interesting that this is not sorted out at a time when there is so much movement between leagues because of new NCAA rules. One thing we're going to notice as we get deeper into the T25, is how many of the drafted Canadian prospects are going from CHL junior hockey to the NCAA for a year or so. There is an expectation that American players might be filling in the CHL in the other direction as the NCAA slots at Div I schools fill up. This is not yet a sure thing, but many CHL teams drafted a lot of American players.

Meanwhile, I have seen talk from SHL teams that players are looking to the NCAA as they age out of U20 play instead of trying to break into the SHL proper. This means SHL teams now need to scout the NCAA to find players as they graduate to fill up teams whereas they used to just count on their own juniors moving onto the roster.

How this will shake out in time is still an open question, but there is money to be made, even in hockey, in NCAA sports for the top players. Gavin McKenna likely took home something akin to the signing bonus he just got as part of his ELC for one year in college hockey.
