The 2018-19 NHL season has officially come to an end and after 252 days of play, the St. Louis Blues came out on top. The story speaks for itself.

St. Louis had a poor start to the season costing then head coach Mike Yeo his job (shout out to the, “Heck, my job should be in question” line dropped back in October). Things got so bad for the Blues that trade speculation grew more and more with Vladimir Tarasenko and Alex Pietrangelo among the few being talked about.

The Blues were last in the league in January and it didn’t look as if things could get any worse. And then a goalie from Richmond Hill joined the fold in Jordan Binnington and the team rose in the standings.

They rode the Cinderella story back into a divisional spot and advancing to defeat the Winnipeg Jets, Dallas Stars, and San Jose Sharks to reach the Stanley Cup Final. The series went the distance going to Game Seven and despite being outshot, Binnington kept the Blues in it eventually winning the Stanley Cup.

All those players who grinded it out all season got their comeuppance. And most importantly, Tyler Bozak became a Stanley Cup Champion.

Now to take a page out of Fulemin’s book. The Schadenfreude is way too powerful to pass up on:

  • The Boston Bruins lost Game Seven by a score of 4-1.
  • It looked as if the final result 4-0, but Matt Grzelcyk got one more. Why is that important? Well that brings us to...
  • Brad Marchand’s goof-change which led to an offensive opportunity that Jaden Schwartz and Alex Pietrangelo turned into a 2-0 tally/

All jokes aside, I was truly happy for the St. Louis Blues. Beating Boston was the cherry on top, but to see so many first time winners was special. Especially Bozak and Ryan O’Reilly who went through a lot in their respective careers to get to this point. And who didn’t love seeing Patrick Maroon and his son?

It’s been a fun ride this season and it’ll be interesting to see how the offseason breaks down.  Maybe the Leafs can have a poor start and end up here next June.
