Toronto Maple Leafs @ Buffalo Sabres
07:00 PM at KeyBank Center
Watch on: SN, NHLN, CBC, MSG-B
The Leafs last game was at home on March 12 against the Anaheim Ducks, which Toronto won by a score of 6-4 in regulation. The Leafs have a record of 28-27-11 for a 0.508 Points %.
The Buffalo Sabres last played at home on March 12 against the Washington Capitals. The Sabres lost by a score of 2-1 in regulation, and their current league record is 40-20-6 for a 0.652 Points %.
Winnipeg is the new fifth to last team in the standings today with a Points % of 0.484. If they continue at that points rate, they will finish with 79 points. The Leafs have to finish with 78 points to take that spot in the standings, and they need to play at 0.344 the rest of the season to only get 11 points out of the remaining 16 games.
This has gotten easier for the Leafs to achieve mostly because other teams have won some games.
Los Angeles is the third place team contesting for the two western wild card spots. San Jose holds the second spot with a Points % of 0.540 which would give them 89 points if they maintain that pace. For Los Angeles to get 90 points and take that spot, giving Toronto a second-round pick, they have to play 0.618 the rest of the season. They are at 0.531.
This has gotten harder, even as LA won a game because San Jose has two games in hand.
Them
Conor Timmins name came to mind today. He's listed on IR with a leg injury, but may actually just be suffering from "Buffalo traded for Luke Schenn".
The Sabres are comfortably in the top three in the Altantic and are legitimately contesting top spot with Tampa, which is their main motivation as they play out the last month of the season.
How is Buffalo doing this? They have the fourth highest Save % over Expected on Unblocked Shots in all-situations. Otherwise, they are one of those mediocre five-on-five teams. Their power play is very bad, but they score over expected, so that helps them a little. Their PK is entirely goaltending.
Lindy Ruff said, Samuelsson is doubtful, Pearson is out and Tuch looks like he can play. Ellis is out.
