Us

The Leafs were never going to switch up the lineup after the opening night win, so a helpful loss in Detroit opened the door for Easton Cowan's NHL debut. I wasn't expecting the door to open this wide, however.

The opportunity is here to easily swap in Calle Järnkrok onto the top line if Cowan isn't working there but Matieas Maccelli is working out on line two.

I think that third line, exactly in that formation, did two things last year: it was horrible, and it helped make Bobby McMann look like he was underperforming offensively as well as defensively. In short: I hate it. I do not at all believe Craig Berube thinks it's lovely, but his fourth line dynamic duo is injured, what is he supposed to do?

Steven Lorentz is listed as day-to-day right now with no details or clarity on a return time although he did skate this morning.

Easton Cowan was supposed to start his NHL career being the energy cell on that fourth line. Max Domi was supposed to be a winger this year in the top six. The third line was supposed to be all new and functional with Nic Roy as the centre.

There's no supposed to in hockey, I guess.

This is game one of a back-to-back for the Leafs, so they likely will play Cayden Primeau tomorrow against the Preds.

The Game

Games at weird times are hard to focus on, but focus they must, and think fast.
