Watch on: ESPN+, HULU, TVAS, TSN4

The Leafs last game was away on January 12 against the Colorado Avalanche, which Toronto won by a score of 4-3 in overtime. The Leafs have a record of 23-15-7 for a 0.589 Points %.

The Utah Mammoth last played at home on January 11 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Mammoth lost by a score of 3-2 in overtime, and their current league record is 22-20-4 for a 0.522 Points %.

Them

Utah is a very similar team to the Ottawa Senators in some ways. Both teams have excellent Corsi and Expected Goals percentages, and neither team looks good in the standings. For the Senators, it's all terrible goaltending. For Utah?

One thing to note is that their Expected Goals offensively is better than their Corsi, so in other words, they don't create as much offence as it seems, they do create quality chances, though. That seems to me to leave them open to a particular kind of defending that focuses on dealing with dangerous chances near the net.

Their power play Expected Goals and actual Goal rates are almost identical to the Avalanche, so very bad. Their PK is very poor, but their goaltending has created the illusion it's good.

However, in all-situations their goaltending is about league average and they are 18th in the NHL.

So, the Mammoth troubles are more complex than the Senators, and could likely be solved by importing some higher level of skill in their forwards.

Us

There is no word on anything today for these teams, so assuming Nick Robertson is out, and Calle Järnkrok is in, then I've made some adjustments.

The Game

A good article on Maccelli from the Utah paper:

Matias Maccelli returns to Delta Center this week. Why didn’t it work out in Utah?

That was a very physical and demanding game the Leafs played last night. Which is part of the deal, so no sympathy from me.

Do it again, just as hard. Utah is a very meat and potatoes team, so you have to do that and show off the skill both.
