Hockey Canada - Caroline Ouellette retires (video)

Caroline Ouellette announces retirement - Eyes On The Prize

Canada’s Caroline Ouellette retires from professional hockey - Sportsnet.ca

The announcement that came yesterday was not a shock — Caroline Ouellette had been seen at Canadiennes camp wearing the outfit of a member of the coaching staff, not a jersey — but even til the last there was some hope that maybe it wasn’t true. That she’d stay on the reserve list. Play a couple more games. What’s CWHL hockey without Caroline Ouellette?

If there was a CWHL Hall of Fame, they’d waive the waiting period and Ouellette would walk right in. She was the first, and so far only player to break the 300 career point mark, finishing her career as the league’s all-time leader in both points (315) and assists (184), and second in goals scored (131).  She has won league MVP twice, the Angel James Bowl (scoring title) once, and the Clarkson Cup four times.

Her international career was also impressive, sitting third in National Team scoring, with four Olympic gold medals, six World Championships and time as team captain.

She has also been a player representative with Hockey Canada, holds multiple coaching clinics every year for players of all ages, and has taken a girl’s team to the prestigious Tournoi International de Hockey Pee-Wee de Québec for the last three years. She’s an assistant coach with the Concordia Stingers, will be part of the coaching staff for Team Canada at 4 Nations this November, and remains with the Canadiennes as an assistant coach as well.

Caroline Ouellette is an icon in women’s hockey for all the right reasons, one of the few with a legitimate shot at entering the Hockey Hall of Fame as both a player and a builder. It has been a privilege to watch her play.
