Spencer Carbery has been the assistant coach of the Maple Leafs since the summer of 2021 after three years coaching in the AHL. There has been talk all summer that multiple NHL teams were interested in him as a head coach, giving him a step up to the next rung on the career ladder – the way most teams fill open positions.

The Leafs have had three assistants behind the bench, with Manny Malhotra and Dean Chnyoweth making up the trio with Carbery. The Leafs coaching situation is, like everything else, up in the air until a GM is hired. Carbery was the power-play guy, though, so no matter what happens with the head coach, a new assistant seems necessary.
