The Toronto Sceptres beat the reigning PWHL champions Minnesota Frost 2-1 on the road to open their 2025-26 season. Kiara Zanon scored the game-winning goal in her PWHL debut. Zanon is fresh out of college and was drafted in the second round this past summer. She is one of four players drafted by Toronto to play in their opening night roster.

The Sceptres biggest acquisition of the summer, Canadian Olympic team star defender Ella Shelton, also scored in her Toronto debut. She played a game-high 24:45 icetime – by the way icetime is now a tracked and published stat on the PWHL website!!! The league is also publishing faceoffs, hits, and blocks.

Starting goalie Raygan Kirk (Winter Captain Kirk) stopped 30 of 31 shots against the powerhouse offense from Minnesota for her first win of the season. Her only goal allowed was from KCS. Natalie Spooner nonchalantly opened her season with two assists and a game-leading five shots. Emma Maltais, unsurprisingly, led the team with 4 hits.

Renata Fast was a late scratch due to an upper-body injury.

For Toronto's next game, they will host the Boston Fleet next Saturday at CCC. Puck drop is 2pm and the game will be broadcast on CBC. Games this season are a mix between TSN (15 games), Prime (7), CBC (5), and SN (3). Among the league's Takeover Tour games, Toronto will play games this season in Halifax, Hamilton, Calgary, and New Jersey.

In other PWHL news, Sarah Nurse scored the first goal in Vancouver Goldeneyes history! She signed with the team over the summer, and is there alongside fellow former Sceptres Hannah Miller, Izzy Daniel, and Kristen Campbell. Nurse, Miller, and Campbell all signed as free agents, Izzy Daniel was taken as part of the expansion draft.

Julia Gosling also left the Sceptres via the expansion draft to the Seattle Torrent, along with Megan Carter. Gosling scored that franchise's first two goals. Vancouver beat Seattle 4-3 in overtime in an entertaining league debut for both clubs.

Another Leafs prospect has moved to centre! Harry Nansi played centre in lower leagues, but I didn't expect him to play there higher up. But here he is! Nansi has begun to introduce himself as an exceptional playmaker in the OHL. He has 9 goals and 24 assists in 23 games for Owen Sound (red).

Tyler Hopkins scored both goals for Kingston in their 3-2 loss to Peterborough. Fellow draftee, Nansi, has been out-scoring him this season.
