All eight teams play today, the last day before the Olympic break, and this is the picture heading into today's action:

PWHL GP GR PTS W OTW OTL L PCT GF GA
Boston Fleet 13 17 28 8 1 2 2 0.718 30 20
Minnesota Frost 14 16 25 6 2 3 3 0.595 44 30
Montréal Victoire 14 16 24 6 3 0 5 0.571 30 21
New York Sirens 15 15 23 7 0 2 6 0.511 34 37
Vancouver Goldeneyes 15 15 19 5 1 2 7 0.422 30 35
Ottawa Charge 15 15 19 3 5 0 7 0.422 36 39
Seattle Torrent 13 17 16 4 1 2 6 0.410 29 36
Toronto Sceptres 15 15 17 4 1 3 7 0.378 27 42

To say that's not good for Toronto is an understatement, but this is just halfway through the season so there is a lot of room to get some three-point wins in regulation and change that picture dramatically.

But they aren't the only team who can say that. The standings are seriously wide open, with only Boston with so many wins they can comfortably absorb bad games.

I think it's now more clear than ever that while the Sceptres aren't scoring – they do have some bad shooting luck with good players who are getting a lot of shots not getting goals – the real problem here is goals against. This is a goalie-first league still.

The league average Save % (a team stat) is .926. The Sceptres are at .911 not counting ENGs. And that's the main reason they are last.

But that is a team stat, so there is absolutely going to be an element of skater responsibility to their situation.

You can't find a smoking gun in Shots on Goal allowed per game. There just isn't enough to go on in only 15 games, an interesting coaching dilemma in the PWHL to be sure. But the Sceptres are not giving up too much, that's actually Ottawa, and even they aren't beyond what a goalie can account for if they're better than average.

Team SA per GP
BOS 25
MTL 26
NY 27
TOR 28
MIN 28
VAN 30
SEA 31
OTT 32

So that's the picture. Whatever the mix is between how the team plays and how well the goalies do, the Sceptres can't just continue on and hope their shooting luck changes and it all become sunny and happy. Getting more goals ain't gonna hurt though.
