Hello Maple Leafs fans! It’s been a long time since we’ve had a prospect report up on the site, but December is a busy month. Now that I’m unemployed again, I have all the time I need to get these out on a regular basis once again.

It’s a good time to be back at it, as the CHL trade deadlines were last Thursday and there was a flurry of activity with a few Maple Leafs prospects changing teams.

There was also some Leafs kids at the World Juniors, and a mystery with Rasmus Sandin. Let’s catch up with these guys and see what they did last week.

Ontario Hockey League
#11 - Mac Hollowell (D) - 0G, 2A, +1
Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds - 27-10-4-1 - 2nd Western Conference

Everyone was abuzz with Greyhounds talk this week, but it wasn’t about Mac. Rasmus Sandin wasn’t assigned to any teams after being loaned to Sweden for the World Junior Championships. There was talk he may have ended up back with the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds, playing with Mac Hollowell. However it was revealed he’s injured and will be sticking with the Toronto Marlies while he heals.

Updated with injury news: decisions loom for Rasmus Sandin and the Maple Leafs

Leading up to the deadline, the Greyhounds added rookie defender Drew Wawrow from the Sudbury Wolves and RW Jaden Peca from the Barrie Colts, giving up veteran D Anthony DeMeo and JrA goalie Mario Peccia off the roster.

The Greyhounds were a team everyone was watching to see if they’d be buyers or sellers, but they mostly stood pat and will take their chances in the playoffs.

Hollowell has been continuing his point per game pace this season in the Soo with 45 points in 38 games. He’s third in team scoring, and one point behind first overall in defender scoring.

#5 - Sean Durzi (D) / #29 - Fedor Gordeev (D)
2G, 4A, +4 / 0G, 0A, -2
Guelph Storm - 22-12-4-4 - 4th Western Conference

Both of these prospects were moved at the deadline. Gordeev was reunited with his former Hamilton Bulldogs coach/GM George Burnett - the man who sent him to Flint - early on in the week, and then Sean Durzi joined the team from Owen Sound the day before the deadline after rumoured deals sending him to Niagara and London fell apart.

The Storm also added big names in Nick Suzuki, Markus Phillips, and MacKenzie Entwistle, this season. They’re loading up for a good playoff run this season, and the addition of the Leafs prospects only makes their blueline stronger.

Durzi missed half of the games played so far this season, but on his return to the ice he didn’t miss a beat, with three goals and 13 assists in 18 games. Gordeev will see his minutes cut in Guelph, giving him more of a chance to make an impact on the game without being looked upon as the team’s #1 defender.

#19 - Semyon Der-Arguchintsev (C) - 0G, 2A, -5
Peterborough Petes - 22-17-1-1 - 5th Eastern Conference

The Petes added a few minor players at the deadline, but made their biggest splash in acquiring defender Ryan Merkley from the Guelph Storm ahead of the Christmas trade freeze.  It did see SDA’s buddy Pavel Gogolev traded the other direction, but the move helped keep the Petes in the playoff race in the Eastern Conference, and they may even be able to steal second in the division from Oshawa - no one will dethrone Ottawa from first.

#19 - Ryan McGregor (F) - Injured
Sarnia Sting - 18-19-5-2 - 6th Western Conference

Sarnia was quiet at the deadline, accepting their status as playoff filler for the teams higher up in the standings. They brought in Anthony Tabak from Sudbury, but nothing much else.

Ryan McGregor is second in team scoring, just two behind line mate Hugo Leufvenius, with 15 goals and 32 assists.

#18 - Riley Stotts (C) - 2G, 1A
Calgary Hitmen - 21-17-3-1 - 2nd EC Wild Card

Sitting in the last wild card spot in the west, the Hitmen made one move at the deadline, trading for the rights to Quinn Olson who is currently committed to playing for the University of Minnesota-Duluth in 2020.

#18 - Filip Kral (D) - 0G, 3A
Spokane Chiefs - 24-13-2-2 - 3rd US Division

Most of Spokane’s moves were moving players up and down from junior A.  They did add goalie Reece Klassen from the Lethbridge Hurricanes but stood pat for the most part.

#33 - Ian Scott (G) - 78sv, 86sh, 0.907sv%
Prince Albert Raiders - 37-5-0-1 - 1st East Division

At the WHL deadline the Raiders added goaltender Boston Bilous as backup to Ian Scott, with former back up Donovan Buskey going down to the BCHL Trail Smoke Eaters. They also added defender Loeden Schaufler, who is on his third team this season, forward Bryce Bader from the Calgary Hitmen, and the big addition was Dante Hannoun from Victoria. He had 36 points in 28 games for the Royals before being traded, and brings his offensive firepower to the top team in the CHL - The Raiders have only four losses so far this season.

#33 - Zachary Bouthillier (G) - 41sv, 44sh, 0.932sv%
Saint John Sea Dogs - 11-29-2-1 - 9th Eastern Conference

Bouthillier moved teams and provinces, as he left the Chicoutimi Sagueens and headed east to Saint John, New Brunswick where hopefully he’ll get more starts until March, when his season will end because the Sea Dogs are 22 points out of a playoff spot.

#14 - JD Greenway (D) - 0G, 3A
Dubuque Fighting Saints - 16-22-3-3 - 3rd in Eastern Conference

In the USHL, Greenway has found a place he’s comfortable and is playing every game. He’s at 22 points in 32 games, 8th overall in league scoring for defenders. Greenway has also re-committed to college, getting ready to playing for Maine next season.

#31 - Joseph Woll (G) - 50sv, 58sh, 0.862sv%
Boston College Eagles - 3rd Hockey East
Overall: 7-10-2 / Conference: 7-2-2

Woll isn’t having the dynamite season he saw last year, but on the plus side, most of the Eagles’ losses have come from outside their conference.

#8 - Dakota Joshua (F) / Ryan O’Connell (D)
Ohio State Buckeyes - 1st Big 10 Conference
Overall: 13-5-4 / Conference: 6-3-3

In his final season in college, Joshua has scored six goals and 11 assists in 22 games. Not an outstanding pace, but not one that would make him expendable as a prospect. O’Connell didn’t play last weekend, and he’s only scored one goal this season. He’s only a freshman, but it’s still a little less than you’d want to see.
