Women’s pro hockey in Minnesota a ‘dream come true’ of excitement and uncertainty - StarTribune.com
A new beginning: Whitecaps skate into NWHL era, led by a familiar face – The Athletic
Last weekend, the NWHL’s newest team played their first games, and it went pretty much as perfectly as they could have hoped.
To start, both games had sold out by Friday—maybe not surprising, considering the hold women’s hockey already has in the state of Minnesota, but great news nonetheless. The Whitecaps made the most of that crowd. They rolled over the defending Isobel Cup Champion Metropolitan Riveters, winning 4-0 on Saturday and 3-1 on Sunday. It was assumed upon announcement of expansion that the Whitecaps would be immediate Isobel Cup contenders—again, they play in Minnesota, and are therefore able to attract a ton of great players who want to stay close to home—and they backed that up immediately, only allowing the Rivs offense one goal on the weekend.

In other NWHL action this weekend, the Buffalo Beauts look every bit as dominant as expected, after cleaning up with big offseason signings like Shannon Szabados, Blake Bolden, and Dani Cameranesi. They beat the Connecticut Whale 4-0, and considering that they outshot the Whale 38 to 10, it’s safe to say that the only reason it stayed that low was Meeri Räisänen in goal for the Whale. The Beauts travel to Minnesota the last weekend in October; it’ll be very interesting to see how those two early favorites line up against each other.
NWHL Weekend Wrap: Week One
The Minnesota Whitecaps made quite an entrance into the NWHL this weekend, topping the defending Isobel Cup Champions twice. Elsewhere, the Buffalo Beauts shut out the Connecticut Whale with Nicole Hensley at the helm.
