Leafs make modest moves as waiver frenzy descends on the NHL

With rosters to be set by 5 pm tomorrow, the NHL is in a frenzy of waiving players to meet the 23-player limit.

Tampa Bay Lightning v Toronto Maple Leafs
Maybe the Leafs do like Laich after all

All of that is as expected, but that leaves a couple of questions: where’s Brooks Laich and is Brandon Prust still on his PTO?

It is also reported that while Laich was playing extra forward at the Leafs practice today, Prust wasn’t there. He is still on his PTO.

The Leafs have until tomorrow to decide who to cut. They can do the expected and release Prust and send Laich to the AHL, or they can put someone on IR. They do seem to have Josh Leivo on the roster for now, and while he was also at practice playing extra forward, it’s not clear what his injury status is.

In other league news, P.-A. Parenteau was waived by the Islanders in a surprising move. He would be a very tempting player to add back on the roster, particularly if Laich is not going to cut it as player/mentor. But with the Leafs so tight to the cap, it might not be worth it just for a more stable power play.

Aside from a couple of decent backup goaltenders to be had for the claiming, Teemu Pulkkinen is the biggest standout on the list as a young player with potential.

The Leafs have the highest waiver claim priority, but then, they also have the best set of prospects in the NHL. Maybe standing pat is the smart play here.

We will know tomorrow how the current roster will shrink by two.
